the village at night

village lanterns
glow like salamanders
and out of crevices
scurry scorpions
wasps whizz in the darkness
and the first mosquitoes
zoom to feast on
the last of the tadpoles
before they turn
into rigid-limbed frogs
floating at the pond’s edge
goldfish gaze up from the water
looking for more food
beetles suck the last sweetness
out of the figs
the small birds are asleep
except for the owls
that screech
and then wing away
soundlessly weightlessly
in the salamander glow
of village lanterns
