Breezy Days

in my garden
the breeze
lures out ravens
and rats
in my garden
a melody ripples
through the cherry tree and over the wall
from the ice-cream seller that stops on sunny
days in front of the house
in my garden
a compost heap calmly
and quietly waits for the old man
who’s really come to dig for worms
in my garden
the peony turns to the sun
and ‘dislikes being disturbed’
so the plant book says
in my garden
the breeze
brings me the disgruntled
muttering of magpies
in my garden
the gardener rushes about
shooting ravens and rats
ripping out nettles snipping roses and elder
but not the peony which dislikes being disturbed
and is sensitive to pain
he mows and re-mows the lawn
flat to the earth
in my garden
is the breeze I make

English translation by Paul Archer of Sabine Schiffner's Wenn der wind mal weht from her book of poems: Dschinn.

wenn der wind mal weht

in meinem garten da
geht der wind
lockt rabenvögel herein und
ratten
in meinem garten da
weht eine melodie
im kirschbaum und über die mauer die
kommt von dem eiswagen der an sonnigen
tagen vor dem haus hält
in meinem garten da
steht ein komposthaufen ganz ruhig da
wartet auf den großvater der tatsächlich
kommt und würmer zieht
in meinem garten da
dreht sich die pfingstrose zur
sonne hin standorttreu sei sie steht im
pflanzenbuch
in meinem garten da
geht der wind
trägt mir ein unzufriedenes zu
das murren der elstern
in meinen garten da
geht ein gärtner
schießt raben und ratten reißt
die nesseln beschneidet rosen und holunder
nur die pfingstrose nicht die ist standorttreu
und schmerzempfindlich
mäht den rasen bis auf den
grund
in meinem garten da
geht der wind ich mache
hm hm hm
