Translator's Acknowledgements
I am indebted to the author and teacher Ken Tagawa for starting me on the path to learning Japanese and to my many other friends in Fukuyama and Tokyo who have guided me along the way in particular Mr Kondoh for his shining example as a translator and for first introducing me to Japanese literature.
I would like to express my gratitude to Joe Sykes for his perceptive comments on the early drafts of the translations. I would also like to thank Ms Watanabe at Yamaichi International many moons ago who elucidated many of the details of the poems and explained their context.
