Winter Fires
I've been burning winter fires -
I expect you've done it too.
Since dawn I've been paring bushes
Pulling reluctant roots from soil
Sawing branches back to boughs
And now there's a yellow flame
That darts through the dry pile
Turning it into carbon and smoke.
I've been burning winter fires -
I expect you've done it too.
From the end of the garden the smoke
Curls over the hedge and fades
Into the grey sky, taking memories
Of summer nights and spring days
Until it's only a memory itself,
Smelling sharp, stinging the eyes.
I've been burning winter fires -
I expect you've done it too. |
