Nairobi Conference

In the comfort of its air-conditioned chamber
the conference faces up to climate change
by deploying words like 'urgent' and 'action'.

Two hours away, the Masai are surviving
on their own, fighting their hunger, losing
their cattle in drought after drought.

The Swaziland dancers and drummers
perform on the conference hotel's lawn
in front of stiff lines of suited delegates.

A smell of beef hits their nostrils
and thick smoke wafts over from a barbecue
of useless and worthless press releases.
