Thoughts on Consciousness

I

What is perceived
Is conceived

By consciousness
From the coruscation

Of 'Out
There' and

'In
Here'

II

What we call
'The world'

Comes through
The electric

Buzz of our
Life 'in here'

Evolving
With every

Instance of life
Out of inert

Numbness
To find thin

Pathways through
The confusion

Of the possible
Crushing

Clanging,
And so also

Out there and in here
Are just terms

Of convenience
For scientists

As they dissect,
Measure, analyse,

But there is
No separation -

In here is out there
Out there in here

III

The sensors
On scientific probes

Compensate for
The limited range

Of the sensors
In our bodies,

Reporting back
From forays

Into the unknown
Until they reach

No further: their
Resolution gives out,

What we think
Of as 'all', is only

The smack of one
Grain of sand in a

Sandstorm that begins
Where it ends,

The tracks of man
Are birdprints

On boundless infinitude

IV

So - and perhaps
We've always

Known this -
Not being

A part
Apart,

Is to be immersed
In the immense,

From the first breath
That inhales

The dimensions
Of the universe

And exhales
Tremors that race

Into timelessness -
We know that all

Is not out there,
It is here, now, in us.
